Surface treatment
When the bronze comes out from the mold it has a number of imperfections. The surface is fairly rough with 'potatoes', small beads of bronze which would have been air bubbles in the original mold. The shining lines are where there would have been 'feathers', sharp frills of bronze that are from the cracks in the mold. To remove these unsightly extras a series of fine chisels, dremmels, grinding stones and old fashioned sand paper are used. The holes are where the support nails were and will be filled in with bronze weld later.
